Short History of the Breed:

This breed originated from Germany. The name means "monkey-like terrier" in German. Its original purpose was to rid households of small rodents and pests.

Physical Description & Size:

Affenpinschers are small dogs, with a typical height of about 10 inches. Average weight in a show dog is about 7 to 12 pounds. Puppy mill dogs and those deemed pet quality by show breeders are frequently lots larger. These dogs have large eyes, a "mustache," and a tuft of chin hair that gives the monkey like expression. Colors are black, black with tan, red or gray, silver, and mixed colors referred to as Belge.

Temperament:

Fun-loving and affectionate dogs that are not easily trained. They often prefer only one family member above all others. Positive training methods work better than punishment. Very intelligent (which does not mean easily trained) and makes a good alarm dog. Very loyal to loved ones, but reserved around others. Small breed that if healthy requires lots of exercise for their size and as puppies in particular they are extremely active. Calmer as adults and more apt to be 'couch potatoes' as they mature if owner allows them to become overweight.
Not a breed suitable for small children or owners that are easily pushed around.
It is fair to warn a prospective Affen owner that this breed often possesses a "big dog in a small body" mentality. This boldness makes it necessary to be cautious that your little "Rottweiler wannabe" does not inadvertently provoke an attack by a large dog. It is this same bold attitude, however, that also make them such a joy to own.

Dog Care

For proper coat, affenpinschers should be hand stripped of dead coat instead of clippers or scissors being used. Firm brushing 2 to 3 times per week and plucking out of dead hairs recommended to maintain coat. Careful care must be taken of the eye area so that eyes do not become infected or scratched by overgrown fur.

Health Issues, Life Expectancy:
Luxating patella, heart issues, hip problems, leg breaks in young pups due to death defying leaps, retained baby teeth are all problems seen in the breed.
Life expectancy of a healthy dog should be early teens.
